PROBE for Healthcare

PROBE for Healthcare encapsulates the benefits of PROBE Best Practice Benchmarking in a form which is tailored to the needs of healthcare organisations and services, while maintaining comparability with other sectors as an aid to mutually-beneficial learning across sector boundaries.

We had done a lot of work in the 3 years between our first and second uses of PROBE. The strengths identified in the second report reflected that work - around leadership, people management and some other areas. There were still some areas for improvement, of course... every time you do it, it moves you on.

Customisation of PROBE for the needs of Healthcare providers has been achieved via a collaboration with the UK's National Health Service, through the NHS Learning Alliance, a leading provider of Organisation Development and Training services across the NHS and other public services. Extensive trialing with service delivery teams has led to refinement of PROBE for Healthcare, and has demonstrated its applicability and benefits in the Healthcare context.

PROBE for Healthcare is based on research which demonstrates that the most important people for any organisation are:

  • the people who use and benefit from the organisation's services
  • the people who work in and for the organisation to design, deliver and support those services
  • other 'stakeholders', including those who identify the need for the services, and pay for them (a 'stakeholder' being anyone who is affected in any way by the organisation and the services that it delivers)

In Healthcare (as in some other public service settings), there are often multiple 'stakeholders' and multiple 'customers' whose needs and wants must be understood and balanced. The PROBE process has proved invaluable as an aid for Healthcare teams, services and organisations wishing to make further progress in their work to optimise outcomes while achieving this difficult balancing act.
